Do you LEASE or OWN your Tow Vehicle?

We're talking ONLY tow vehicles that are being used for pulling a towable RV . Class A's and Class C's are excluded. Cars and MDT/HDT trucks that tow are included. Also included are tow vehicles that tow an RV and a second trailer behind it.

THANKS to Midnightmoon for his thread entitled "Who Leases Their Tow Vehicle" which gave me the idea for making this topic a poll.

I currently lease mine but I will probably buy it when the lease is up. I suspect the truck will be worth more than they want for me to purchase due to excellent condition and low mileage.

I currently own mine and have been towing with the same truck for 11 years now. However, I have been kicking around the idea of leasing the next time around for several reasons. First, the technology is changing so fast that as soon as you buy something now, a new better version or a new exciting feature has been introduced. Second, because of all of the new complexity, I am more and more concerned with long term reliability and the ability to fix them outside of the warranty period. Third, and maybe least important, there is a sense of security when dealing with something new on a regular basis. You assume that since it is new you should get from point A to point B without issue. Leasing, at least on the surface, would force me in to a new vehicle on a regular basis. There's nothing wrong with my old truck currently and I'm very comfortable working on it. But it's always in the back of my mind how old it is and how many miles it has on it.

Own, but I might go back to leasing. Actually should say "almost" own - I think there are 4 or 5 payments left. I have leased most of my vehicles in the past, but was swayed toward purchase this time.

Although I still really like the Traverse, mine has been a bit of lemon. My maintenance costs as I approach my 6th anniversary (approaching 80k miles) are about 25% of what I paid for the vehicle new, and that is something I didn't count on. It would have been nice to walk away from it at 4 years and get another one.

I agree with @Midnightmoon, I totally fall for the new features that keep getting added. I did add a new very high-end head unit to mine last spring so I could enjoy Android Auto (or CarPlay).

Latest expense last week was C$300 for a new AGM battery (parts are pricey here in Canada). Also ~$2k last year for new summer and then winter tires.
Expenses like these wouldn't be an issue on a lease.

I own, well make payments on, mine. Never thought about leasing a truck. I generally don't keep them for more than 4-6 years in the end. I probably should look at leasing next time. Do they lease 3/4 or 1 ton diesels?

That's a great question and one that I would like to know the answer to also. I've never asked at a dealership since I've really never considered leasing before now.

If you own a business they'll lease it out, mainly Ford, GM will lease a 3500 but it has to be leased to a business.

Why can't you lease a diesel?

In Canada anyway, they will lease you anything you want, as long as you can afford the payments.

Own.

I bought a 2016 F150 which was the last model year of the Ecoboost Gen 1 and 6-speed transmission.

It is also the 2nd model year for the aluminum body.

I had no interest in buying the first model year of the body or the new Ecoboost Gen 2 with 10 speed. I also wasn't interested in start/stop technology.

I might see what 2018 brings with the new F150 diesel, but again, I wouldn't buy 1st model year of that engine.

I own both of our current vehicles right now (well making payments on my TV) and I've leased in the past for the DW's vehicle. For me, I didn't like making a payment for something and then having to give it back (I know it's somewhat cheaper for the monthly payment)...but I just didn't like not having anything to own after shelling out money! I will say that with that lease that we had for 3 years I think I had the oil changed 2 times...like I said...I didn't "own" the vehicle when it was all said and done. Now on the vehicles that we own, I do the oil changes every 6 months (we never hit the mileage, so I go with 6 month intervals). I like the new high tech gadgets that come with a new vehicle too, but not enough to keep paying to keep up with them! There will always be something new that comes along! I just can't afford to keep up with the Kardashions!

Own, i did look into leasing, but would've paid way more per month in doing so. You don't really see good lease terms/deals on the types of trucks you'd want for towing.

We had to get rid of our Toyota when we bought our 25RKS, as Toyota told us that towing with the lease vehicle, or making any material modifications to it would violate the terms of the lease. Good grief, they wouldn't let us a install a tranny temperature gauge.

We just bought a F150, so we wouldn't have to worry violating the lease... there are a LOT of restrictions in the lease agreement fine print.

Own - we have never leased any vehicle. We put too many miles on to lease to not pay an overage. We pull with a GMC Yukon. We usually keep our vehicles 5 years.

Own
We generally keep a vehicle for over 10 years and fleecing vehicles pads someone else’s pocket not mine
Free of debt is wonderful

Own - my TV is also my daily driver and I tend to hang on to my vehicles for an extended period of time. Back in the mid-80's and 90's when I was doing a lot of commuting for work I racked up over 225K on a '85 Dodge Daytona turbo before finally trading it in. I finally wised up and found a job closer to home so now it's only 5 miles one way and only 2-3 days a week at the office. So I'm expecting to keep the TV for quite a while.....

GM doesn't lease 3/4 or 1 ton diesels. Maybe you could find a bank that would. I own.
