outside fixtures sealant

saw the thread on sealants and bought some Lexel at lowes to do all my outside lights and fixtures. What I did not get from the thread was the proper way to prep. I have smooth fiberglass side walls and don't want to damage them. The owners manual is useless in this remedy so I thought I would ask the folks who really know, you all. Thanks in advance.

Good ole soap and water followed by a light rub of alcohol, let dry and apply.
Excellent choice on the lexel sealant, I've switched to it.

Oh, try and remove or cleanup any old caulk, I'll take a razor blade and carefully remove.

PaulB12,

Thanks for the info, exactly what I was looking for. The old caulk removal is what I needed to know (the how to). When I bought the Lexel I also got 3 plastic paint scrapers and tried that. that is a little teedius and didn't know if there was a quicker way (i.e. mineral spirits or something). I think as you said, a little wipe of alcohol would help the adhesion of the new caulk. Thanks again.

I don't know what the old caulk is but in many cases you can use a hair dryer (not a heat gun, to hot!) to warm it up and make it more pliable.
