Battery box.

I am wondering if it would be ok to have a battery on the tongue of a TT without a battery box. Acid leakage would not be an issue with an AGM, and a cover could be made for the top positive post. I realize that some boxes provide anti theft protection, but my current $12 plastic “marine” box does none of that. Thoughts anyone? Jay.

A battery box, even a cheap plastic one, will help protect the battery from the elements. That may not seem like a big deal, but extreme weather exposure (heat, rain, snow) is not good for any kind of battery.

I actually never thought about rain. I don’t see heat as an issue compared to under hood of a car or truck. Jay.

The connections to the wiring cables, the ends of the cables where the cable is clamped to the ring ends, fuse for the jack all will benefit from the box keeping some moisture off them. Also keeps off road grit, mud and trash.

The box will also reduce the ease of theft. It just slows them down but it also conceals the more expensive AGM vs cheaper batteries. Also protects the battery cutoff switch from external corrosion.

You're right about the heat as compared to under the hood of a car. But I was thinking more about direct sunlight and the damage UV rays might do to the battery.

Here in the San Joaquin valley of central California, we have several months of temps well over 100 degrees, and that sunlight can destroy anything plastic left outside.
