Water Heater Failure

Our 6 gal. Atwood water heater will only heat on gas. When we try to use the electric, we get a "hot wire" smell, and we think we hear a little "sizzle" sound coming from the water heater. It is in a compartment under a rear wall wardrobe closet, 2016 Jay Feather 23RBM.

We read about the thermostat and a sensor that can go bad. Thoughts?

Check the connections, sounds like a loose wire.

The external wires on the front of the unit (behind the exterior access door) are secure. I have not opened up the styrofoam shell to check the wires going into the back of the unit.

They may be secure but chances are one of them is corroded. This is very common. That happened to us a couple of seasons ago. Fortunately my wife carries emery boards! It's been working fine ever since.

You should not have to open anything up under the foam.
