Like mentioned above, don’t underestimate the stress caused by towing a trailer behind you vs just cruising in a vehicle. It takes a lot more concentration and you can’t drive as fast. Can I go 10 hrs driving all day pulling a camper? Sure, but I’m damn tired and frazzled and sure as heck don’t want to do it day after day.

Thanks!

All, good advice. I have adjusted our itinerary to 450-500/day. All are happy here. We can have a nice breakfast, and grill in the evening. All I did was arrive in Chicago 6 hours later.

This is a great group!

Download several books on tape, as they help to keep the mind engaged as you listen while driving...helps me with the long haul fatigue.

You must figure 50mph average, so 500 miles is 10 hours. Most people say 300-350 mi. per day or 3pm and call it a day. Unless you have a second driver.

Just back from FL in our Greyhawk 29MV

We just returned from our first long trip --10 day trip to FL from MD and found that 8 hours driving is too much for us, even though we switched drivers about every 2 hours. We're still recovering....lesson learned! We're 67 and 73.

Good luck!

I'll ditto what others have said where it depends on you and your rig. I'm upper 40's and have no trouble driving 900-1000 miles a day. That will probably come down as I age, but I'm still able to do it without any issue. But, my primary job is sitting in planes for 10-14 hours a day anyway. So, I use techniques to keep from getting clots in my legs from sitting so much and all. My 5er is easy to drive and hardly notice the trailer is behind me.

When I had my bumper pull it was a different issue. 13-14 hours was my max with it. It was a lot of work to tow, even with a HD truck and an appropriate anti-sway and weight distribution hitch. The 5er is easy to forget it's there until I look in the rear view and see the big cap staring back at me.

Don't push it if your unsure and take the breaks you need to stay healthy and not fatigued. Everyone is different and it takes a few trips under your belt with your equipment to know where your limits are.

Enjoy the time and stay safe!

We like to drive no more than 300-350 per day so as to allow time to set up and unwind before hitting the sack.

We do 350 to 400 miles a day with a pickup and travel trailer. 600 if just the truck and making time.

When I was about 30-35 years younger I once drove a standard auto 1000 miles in one day. Today at 78 I’m good for 300 max. I’m retired, essentially have almost no time constraints. In a car I would probably try for 400 if I needed to. In an RV, towing a car, never. Not only is driving an RV more challenging than an ordinary auto, but you’ve whatever checkout you must do before starting out in the morning, you’ve got set up each night. My suggestion is to add a minimum of one day to your target drive and I would probably plan on 5 days and be pleased to get there a day early.

I am fine to drive for 9-10 hours. We will have Mom and her dog....
Already have reservations for the trip.

Any seasoned advice is appreciated.

How long are you planning on being there? If it’s for a couple of months or any decent amount of time, why not just take each day as it comes? You never know what might be 20 miles down the road. If something/somewhere looks nice, then why not stop in overnight and enjoy everything this beautiful country his to offer.

I agree with this. We are full time and regularly make long trips. You need to factor in eating, gas stops, mechanical problems (flat tire prolly two hour minimum delay). We try to avoid getting settled at end of day in the dark and/or packing up a crack of dawn. I’m hoping you have allowed for advance driving times that are based on just a car or truck, not an rv.

More years, Less miles!

It seems the older we get the less of a hurry we are in. I like about 300 miles a day, try to get parked early and then relax. I'm retired so we can pace ourselves, sure is nice. I can knock out 500 miles a day but prefer not to.

Your rig can make a lot of difference too! If it drives and handles well, it makes the day a lot better.

300 to 400

Go with 300 to 400 miles per day and you cant go wrong, get in not so tired and allow for road/traffic/weather issues...🖒

I bought my trailer so I could take my time and see the sites along the way. If I was on that tight of schedule I would fly and spend the extra time at the destination.

We did Michigan to Denver and stopped half way at a rest stop outside of Des Moine. My mother loved it because it was something different. We used the trailer as a place to sleep and eat. Plus walk the dogs in their area. We were tucked in between two trucks. Just an idea if you want something fun. Colorado will not let you stop over nite at any rest stop and I do not suggest any truck stops. We had an issue with that one. Good luck.
