If I shut it off, I wouldn't remember to turn it on until just after I turned the shower on

Ours is on electric from arrival until departure. If no power, propane on as needed.

Annual Showers?
It used to be that when my wife woke me up at night and told to sleep on the couch, it was because I snored. Now it's because I missed my annual shower.

Re: Hot water heater. I almost always only need hot water in the morning and evenings for washing dishes and then the occasional shower. Use of propane-wise, is it better to leave the hot water heater on all day, or should I turn it off during the day and fire it back up in the evening? Which is more efficient and uses less propane?
We turn it on just before we need it. When we are in a campground with power we run it on electric, no gas unless for taking many showers and then turn off the gas

So, the consensus is to just turn it on a few minutes before needed then turn it off when not needed.

For the rest of your suggestions:
1) It's a 1997. That's before all this electric whiz-gizmo stuff. Thankfully.
2) No electric to water heater.
3) I do often heat water on the stove. I did that for years when I had a teardrop. My stove was a very small back-packing stove. I still carry it just in case. My "electrical system" consisted of 3 AAA batteries.

If you ever want they make a kit for electric, About 100 dollars

I've heard of that. From when my mother and step-father full-timed years ago. I think he called it a hot rod. Thanks, but no thanks. Just something else to break. K.I.S.S.
