A question of experience
1997 Eagle
If some of you have seen my previous, infrequent posts, you will know I am a newbie. Only had this rig since June so another newbie question.
Re: Hot water heater. I almost always only need hot water in the morning and evenings for washing dishes and then the occasional shower. Use of propane-wise, is it better to leave the hot water heater on all day, or should I turn it off during the day and fire it back up in the evening? Which is more efficient and uses less propane?

I turn mine on late afternoon to wash dishes and shower. Then I turn it off before bed and will still have warm water next morning.

We turn ours on about 15 minutes before we need it for showers — typically in the morning. Once done, it stays off usually until evening when we need hot water to wash dishes after dinner. In the meantime, the water actually stays pretty warm in the tank.
It doesn’t make sense to me to continually burn propane to keep a tank of water hot when it’s not being used. I’ve camped next to rigs with water heaters that fired up like a jet engine every 15-20 minutes and frankly it’s annoying.

Our WH is gas and electric. Even when we are on shore power we only turn on as needed. If we need it quick we use both gas and electric and it seems like it heats up quicker. We find ours is still warm several hours later as well.

Well, pure physics says it uses less energy to heat what you need rather than keep it all heated "just in case." My water heater will also use electric or propane so if we're on shore power I am more likely to leave it on. But when on propane, we only turn it on when we know we're going to need the hot water.

Never gave it much thought, but it does make sense to turn it off if your not going to use it. I just joined the “ turn it off “ club!

I turn off the water heater, the water supply and close the awning anytime we're not within touching distance of the camper.

You have confirmed my suspicion. Ttlanders, You made me realize I really don't need to wash the morning dishes - they can wait until the evening. Saves water, too.

We started out with a full set of dishes, but over the past few years DW has increasingly brought along good-quality paper bowls, plates etc. so, breakfast “dishes” may be no more than a couple of mugs and spoons. We can happily leave them to do after dinner.

Along with turning off the water heater, we also turn off the main water line when on city water or the pump when running off of the tank when we leave the trailer for any length of time.
It only took me two major water leaks to get in to that habit. Of course, after the first one, I convinced myself that it could never possibly happen again.

We only turn on the HWH as needed, usually once a day. We also use quality paper plates and bowls. We only have to wash silverware and pots and pans, mugs, once a day.

Couldn’t agree more..
Long time campers tent and backpackers, and now a newbie RVer. The first thing I told my better half about our kitchen is we’re packing quality paper plates and bowls. The only things we wanna wash is silverware, and pots and pans..
Water is bottled, coffee in thermos..Less weight and less noise going down the highway..

We rarely use water heater unless we plan to stay for more than a day or plan to take our annual showers during that time. Most of our hot water comes from an aluminum coffee perker on the stove or running water through the drip coffee maker. It stays hot enough in a thermos and is good for washing dishes and hands. The Atwood propane cold water heater is more of a luxury convivence item.

Hello I have a 2000 jayco Eagle fondly known as Eddie (the eagle). I mostly dry camp and only put hot water heater on for a shower. I heat water on my stove and fill a large thermal jug for uses during the day. Heat more on stove for dish washing after dinner.
I’ve had him since 2014 and he’s still going strong.

Yeah, I'm wondering if I should take advice from somebody who does annual showers. (jk) 
As for heating water on the stove, etc., I do that often. I did it for years when I had a teardrop but now that I have the convenience of an RV, why not make use the convenience.

I say showers should at least be monthly, not a big deal if you miss one though! Just Saying
