Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier

Anybody put a hitch mount cargo carrier on the back of their E450 class ‘C’? I’m interested to know if it had any bearing at all w/ regards to unloading the front axle since all that weight is hanging off the tail, or if the Hellwigs pretty much negate that.

I’d like to buy one, but I don’t want to screw up my handling.

Thanks !

I can’t speak to the affects on your vehicle.

I will let you know what I experienced.
I bought one from a top manufacturer rated at 500lbs capacity.
Had maybe 120lbs in it on first trip. It was bent so bad at first fuel stop I removed it and threw stuff in the pickup.

I called the manufacturer and they were nice. Said the capacity rating was for a “static” load. Once it starts bouncing down the road they make no claims.

Granted mine was on 5th wheel and farther from the rear axle than many motor homes. So probably additional leverage.

I accepted the warranty replacement and sold it NIB immediately.

Found one at harbor freight rated at 800lbs for $94. It made the trip home just fine with same loads.

Get one with a higher rating than you think you need or load it very light.

Ugh - I hadn't considered the 'bounce' effect. Thanks for the tip !

If you're concerned with loading the rear axle/unloading the front axle, how about installing a front hitch?

I considered the front hitch, but I wasn't sure how that would affect the cooling of my engine if I had a bag or something up there blocking some flow.
