Onan® 4,000-watt MicroQuiet™ generator with auto-changeover

I have a 2020 greyhawk Prestige with the Onan 4000 and am having difficulties with it with only 5 hrs on it..wow...

When i go to start it, I am pressing the stop until the light appears and then i hit start and hold it to start. It attempts to start and does not and then when i release the start it has 3 slow blinking red lights that come on.

I cannot imagine the carb is already corroded from the fuel.

I read about making sure the switch is forwarded out at the generator and it is. I am trying to start it as the coach is on shore power at my house and i understand it should still start.

Am i missing something with the initial start up ? This seems to be a continuous issue. I also read someone talking about having the oil level down to the min imum and not full .....

I appreciate any input.

Thanks

As Steve 1152 said you need more prime. You hold the stop button for at least 15 seconds then hit start.

I don't think anybody has mentioned ensuring you have more than a quarter tank of fuel in the vehicle tank.

Also, I found this little snippet in a service manual:

Three blinks indicates a service fault. Press Stop once to cause the
two-digit, second-level fault code to blink. (Pressing Stop again will stop the
blinking.)The two-digit code consists of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 blinks, a brief pause,
and then 1 to 9 blinks. The first set of blinks represents the tens digit and the
second set of blinks the units digit of the fault code number. For example,
Fault Code No. 36 appears as:
blink-blink-blink—pause—blink-blink-blink-blink-blink-blink— long pause—
repeat

Thank you. Well, i was down to a 1/4 tank earlier and did go fill it up. In fact, i usually do take it to a qtr before filling. I will have to stop that procedure. What would the remedy be now to start this ? I have tried priming numerous times....should i just let it sit overnight and try another day ?

Here is a list of fault codes. Make sure this page applies to your model.

I've read on here to hold the stop/prime for 30 seconds

I did a few tests

Hold 15sec, normal hard start
Hold 20sec, seemed a bit faster
Hold 30sec, started very fast, like 3 or 4 cranks

I am sure holding 30sec is the key

Also what altitude are u at. There is a dual on the Genny for sealevel... 3000'.....6500', make sure it's set for what elevation your at

I never run mine much under 1/2 tank because I boondock camp a lot , so maybe plan that too

Hello. Im currently at about 1800 ft. This is brutal trying to find service help with this covid going on. I called Onan and they are saying take it in. I am a newbie with new RV and man am i getting scared....one problem after another when you spend nearly 100k,i am used to reliability and dependability. i guess even if you spend 500k you still have these issues with Rv's, not what i was expecting. Thank you kindly for your input. Who knows, maybe if i let it sit a day or two it will start.

Remember

An RV is a house constantly in an EARTHQUAKE

Issues happen, especially at 1st

Have u tried what I mentioned above

Adjust to 3000' elevation
Hold stop/primer for 30 seconds

Yes, i adjusted it and still the same thing.
I unplug the shore power, i hold the button down for 30 seconds and then press start and it cranks but will not start . Note - i was down to 1/4 tank of gas yesterday, but never ran the generator and filled the tank before i attempted to run the generator. I just keep thinking i am doing something a newbie would be doing wrong... when you adjust the setting should it take effect right away or are you supposed to start the coach etc....

If u added fuel.. didn't you restart the cab??

If u didn't..I mean, common sense says start it to reset any issues

Then try starting the Genny while the cab is running

Also..the Genny may take 4-10 second to start even after priming it

Did they fire up the Genny when u baught it???

No they did not. My wife and i arrived to pick up the unit and the first thing they come out with is a bunch of mumbo jumbo about having to sign papers something about agreeing to arbitration etc which i was very alarmed about and the dealer explained everyone does it and that if i did not agree i could not take delivery of the RV. That was the first warning sign i saw with buying an RV. They did not even clean the new unit which we said either clean it or we are not taking it. They cleaned it for two hours.

Interestingly, the first week when i went to start the generator it would not start....the switch inside the generator was not pulled forward which tells me they never did anything with this genny.

I am trying to get a hold of a cummins/onan service somewhere here in PA- with this covid it seems PA has not yet gone back to work.

I am just hoping these are the learning pains. I am just not used to buying something new and dealing with this....the last time i did it was a volvo that ended being a lemon. With the RV, i dont even think they are ever considered a lemon. What a friggin racquet with RV's

Thank you again for your insight

X-2 If you are getting a 1 & 4 code that means it has to be serviced by ONAN since it was an over frequency and that is why it's not starting.

The procedure I have used with mine since it was new 3 years ago is as follows...
1. Press and hold the STOP side of the button for about 10 seconds, then release.
2. Wait about 10 seconds
3. Press the START side let it turn over about 4 seconds, then release. (if it does not start go to next step.)
4. Press and hold the STOP side of the button for about 10 seconds, then release.
5. Wait about 2 or 3 minutes
6. Press the START side let it turn over about 4 seconds, then release. It should start, do not leave the START button down for more than 4 or 5 seconds at a time as it will burn out your starter. (if it does not start this time repeat the process from step 1)

This process has worked everytime for me without failure.

I believe there's a 3 year warranty from Cummins/Onan on them. Not 100% sure but I think so.

We have a Cummins shop here in Denver, they're good, they're expensive and busy.

I found a local, smaller "authorized Onan repair" shop locally to service mine. I was happy with their work.

Thank you. I have an appt tomorrow at a Cummins / Onan company facility and they will have the RV guy on site. Thankfully they have onsite rv parking with shore power hookup which makes it very convenient since its a 100 mile drive to the place. In talking with Jayco, they tell me " it may be a 20-30 minute fix and your going to the right place to resolve the issue". I will let everyone know the outcome.

Good luck with your repair. Please post the end results. All new rigs have their issues.

Enjoy the journey
