After 3 complete injector bank replacements I started using Hit Shots additive. 100k miles later, no more injector problems...

Tom,
What concentration of DK do you use? I’ve been thinking about an additive of late and your post just scratched that itch. I’ve looked at their web site and see ratios from 1:400 to 1:1500.
Cheers from the south (of you).
Another Tom.

I’m not that precise when adding it. I follow the bottle so a 16 oz treats 40 gallons. I use about 12 oz.

I don't think it's a problem in the newer diesel's but I was running DK grey in my 6.0 and DW always complained about diesel smell. Someone told me to try the Ford additive and it did make a difference. Last trip to Florida I ran out of the Ford and picked up some DK. I park in the garage and a few weeks ago I cranked up and went to work. Later that night she said the garage was smelling and ask me had I ran out of my treatment. I didn't think she would notice. So off to the Ford dealer and picked up a case.

I never noticed a smell when I had a 6.0l
I always used AR6200 for fuel with the 6.0 as well as archoil AR9100 for the oil. Actually never tried the PM22 with it

It didn't bother me. I drove big rig's back in the 80's and I told DW it was the smell of power. She didn't buy it

I bought my truck new in 2011, make sure you are flushing your water/fuel separator monthly, change your fuel filter at least every 15k miles or so.

I never needed an additive, then I moved to Texas for a couple of years, several of the gas stations had notices that they use up to 5% bio diesel, I started having issues, seemed like an injector issue, took it to the dealer several times over a year span, each time the injectors were passing the minimum specs, but the #1 injector was definitely dropping out in comparison to the other 5. I began using additives, specifically sea foam, each time it would help just a bit, finally I realized that not all stations posted biodiesel on their pumps and when I avoided the biodiesel the truck ran great without the additive. The mechanic at the dealership is the one who finally told me to stay away from the biodiesel.

Biodiesel is basically vegetable oil and is thicker, especially when it gets cold, and plugs up injectors with a waxy coat that doesn’t clear out easily. About 11k miles past my warranty the #1 injector finally gave out, replaced it and then I moved to Montana for 2 years, and in colder climates they do not add biodiesel at all, because it will turn to wax really fast, truck runs great. I haven’t used sea foam for almost three years now, I finally used up the 2 cans of sea foam in my generator and lawnmower.

Also, when it gets really cold, like extended below zero cold, I will add a half gallon of unleaded per tank of diesel, never once have I gelled up, and last year I drove several times with -20F temps, never had a gelling issue.

I am on my second cummins, a 2007 5.9 and now a 2015 6.7. I use them as a daily driver and my tow vehicle. Never had an injector problems but I keep filters changed religiously. Manual says change 15,000 miles and I change at 10,000. Never really had any water in the filters. I have never used any additives as it does not get that cold here in South Georgia.

I always use DK in my 6.0 - 06. It's available most anywhere for around $18 a gallon. I have the EGR delete kit and I use a 1/4 cup for every 9 gallons of fuel.

The smell is not a problem as long as the engine runs well. No complaints from dw.

Additives

I have a 2008 Durmax and my O/M states "no additives" or words to that effect. You can poke your money down any hole you want to.

I owned and operated a fleet of diesels in cold country-- In the winter the use of power service additive was near a necessity-- Running the correct fuel to begin with is very important. Some stations actually blend #1 and #2 (this is good) some just put additives at the station and call it winter blend. That's my input on cold weather additives. As far as summer, for maintenance purposes, we did not use additives.

Had an F450 in the past and now have a 2016 F250. Live in northern PA and never used an additive.

My buddy Ron is a service manager for one of our larger excavation / trucking companies. They have almost a hundred over the road trucks and almost 300 pieces of yellow iron (excavators, graders, compactors...) We spend a lot of time camping together and most of our campground pictures are of his family's 5-er with us. He gave me the Power Service advice when I got our first Diesel.

They buy their fuel in bulk from the refinery and all of their trucks fuel in the yard everyday, and every Job Truck has 100-200 gallon tanks they use to fuel equipment in the field. As Randy says, running the correct fuel is critical here in winter. They go as far as testing the fuel they receive (blended in winter) and treat it with bulk Power Service to the lowest temperatures we would reach in Winter.

You really don't know what kind of fuel you are getting when you fill up at the "local Joe's Fuel and Snack shop" unless you have the correct equipment to test your fuel, you will never know if your fuel will be jelled in the morning - until you try to start your rig and fail. It takes a lot of work and equipment to thaw out a gelled fuel system... they end up tenting the truck and use big Propane Heaters to thaw the entire rig (tanks, lines, filters, pumps) It can take 6-8 hours to get a rig back on the road, just because of improperly treated winter fuel that the operator got somewhere else.

Yea... the driver/operator can lose their job for stuff like that...

and they also have to deal with things like this week. He had a driver forget to lower the dump before leaving the service bay - this is his shop.

That sure looks like it woke someone up. Amazing what people are capable of when they dont think.

I use Howes diesel treat in the winter or I dont go somedays in the winter. Between the Howes and plugging the unit in, I havent had any problems with the fuel lines, before I started to use Howes I would gel up in my ram Cummins. I dont use it in the summer.

I'm a stickler for Clean fluids in all my vehicles. I change each vehicle's oil every 3000 miles or less. In my diesel Silverado, I use just Shell Rotella diesel non synthetic. I can do an oil change of 2.5 gallon for $35.

I don't put a lot of miles on my truck. It is a 2002 and has 51,000 miles on it. I always use an additive to the fuel because it sits a lot and sometimes a tank of fuel will last 6-8 weeks. I have never had a fuel issue. I consider it PM and haven't had any problems.
