I'm planning on doing the same thing. I have a 321 RSTS. That shelf is not very strong, it's already concave from the weight of only one battery. It's only held up with 3 pop rivets on each side. My ~40 lb Group 27 was too much.
Are you planning to use only the bottom of that compartment or re-install a stronger shelf first, then add the sliding shelf on that?
I've seen pictures about 2 years ago on this forum of a talented owner who did what you are planning, but I can't find that thread anymore.
I'm guessing because you're diving into this project you need new batteries. Or is it like me, I just want to service them more easily. What batteries are you using?
