Seneca - Horse Trailer - Tongue Weight

Just wondering if anyone pulls a horse trailer with their Seneca?
We are wanting to pull an aluminum trailer (3500)# with 2 - 1000# horses.
I think we are good on total weight just wondering about the tongue weight.
Thanks for the any advise you can offer😊

Ten thousand pounds is the normal rule, but you can check tongue weight stamped in to the metal part of the receiver hitch if the labeling has worn off.

With just two horses, you should be fine. Bumper pull trailers are designed to distribute around 10% of the weight of the total trailer to the hitch. Being that you are only hauling around 6k, I bet your hitch weight is somewhere between 600 and 700 lbs. Even at the max of 15% you would still be at 900lbs and that is still under. If you contacted your trailer manufacturer, they should be able to give you an idea of the percentage of that model. Note that this will only stay true if you balance your load on your axles. If you front load it, you will be heavier on front...which is WAY better than rear loading it and being heavier behind the axles. See youtube video for why...

As mentioned, confirm tongue weight limitations noted on the OEM receiver...., and also check any limitations on your selected hitch ball mount.

Last winter a fellow "Winter Texan" was having issues with considerable 'downward' hitch flexing with the enclosed cargo trailer he was towing behind his MH. I noticed he was using a 12" long hitch extender on his setup, he commented that it set the cargo trailer back further away from the rear corners of the MH during turns.

Upon further investigation we found that the tube style "hitch extender" was rated at only 350lbs maximum tongue weight. When we checked his loaded cargo trailer's tongue weight with my Sherline scale it came in at 650lbs...., well above the 350lb hitch extender maximum.

He went online and ordered a new "solid" steel hitch extender rated at 750lbs (in lieu of a hollow tube style). Utilizing the new hitch extender resolved the hitch assembly flexing issue.

Just food for thought when using hitch extenders......., because I see a lot of them utilized behind MH's towing trailers.

Tammy Stewart - We pull a 3 horse alum. trailer loaded with 3 horses, water and 800 lbs of feed with no problem. We slow a bit climbing over the Cascade mountains in Oregon. We have also towed our 10,000 lb. boat on a 3 axle trailer although we do slow down a bit more with that. We always use exhaust brake on the Seneca and have good trailer brakes.
