I've had a knee bugging me for a while but today I got back to this problem.
I tried asking Jayco and my dealer if they would cover this problem, since it was just out of warranty, and they "declined".
So today I pulled the duct tape I had on there off, and that pulled out the end of the lower panel with it. I could see inside, but couldn't get a good picture. I could see that the front cap had been screwed into a wood frame member below the interior floor, but it looked like a #8 screw, I could only see one of them, and it been pulled out by the roots. I could also see some water staining in there.
So I got three 3/8" x 5" lag screws and 3/8" fender washers, drilled three 5" deep 1/4" pilot holes from the front of the cap level into the center of the wood frame member, mounded some gutter sealant onto the washers, and ran the lag screws and washers in from the front. I tightened them in tandem so they all shared the load, and it pulled the front cap into place. My wife was holding the siding in as this went on so it slid behind the trim on the front cap where it's supposed to be.
It is a truly ugly fix, as you can see, but I think it will hold as long as we own the trailer. I will paint the screws black, which will help the appearance a little, and redo the caulking before going anywhere.
I'd recommend drilling out the fender washer holes a bit if anyone else is going to try this. You can't see in the photo, but they don't mate flush with the front cap. A larger hole would allow the lag screw to go through them at a bit of an angle.
