Short trips are unusual for me. 30k miles yearly 45 mile one way commute. I will probably have to daily the truck for 1 year then add a commuter to the fleet. I guess a lot of test drives are coming up. The plan os this trailer should suit us for 10 years until kids age out. Is it realistic for even a diesel to still be towworthy that far out?

Is the issue the 5.3/gears or the WDH or both? Reason I ask, my 15 Sierra w/6.2 drags my 32BHDS around no problem. And I'm extremely pleased with my Equal-I-Zer.

The little 5.3 seems to be the little engine that can. We were 2 hrs south of atl with steady wind as irma came in 20-30 mph made me realize ther is no margin here. If i stay under 55 it could pull anywhere even the blue ridge mtns were fine. I would like to have comfort factor for the highway and not get pushed by wind or big rigs. The 2014 up gm trucks seem night and day improved the pulling is no issue. The e2 does seem to work great but only up to 60mph. If would like to run 65 and not feel lile im tempting disaster on I 85.

JUst remember, with a smaller light truck, your margin for error is less. Having it loaded less than optimal and emergency maneuvers. I also loved how the engine brake worked in the mountains. My ecodiesel really pulled ok, but get on a bouncing road etc, it was not as controlled as I wanted it.

That is a pretty big trailer for a half ton. I agree with the folks that say get a one ton. The price difference relative to a three quarter ton is minimal. A diesel will add a fair chunk to the bill but it will pull all day, every day, over hill, over dale, and it will do it for ten years with no issues as long as you maintain it properly. The higher payload capacity, higher torque, bigger brakes, etc, will give you a much more comfortable and safe towing experience. Get a single wheel if fivers are not in your future. Get doubles if fivers are inevitable in a year or two. My two cents. Enjoy the trailer and the glamping

I pull our 232 RB (total length 27') 4500 lbs dry weight with our F150 2.7 ecoboost. It does really well, I find myself at 70 without even knowing we have that hooked up. If it's windy, I have to keep it around 60-65 though. We do have a Husky Center-line hitch on it that keeps it directly behind us without much sway. We have yet to take it out to the mountains, I would love to go out to see blue ridge highway again. Our gas mileage drops from 20 to about 10 when pulling. Any thoughts on how our setup will be on the mountains?

Hey markscns, welcome to the forum. You may want to start your own thread. Your setup is way different than the OP and would be better discussed separately from this topic....

I’ll add to this conversation.

Just bought a 2012 330RLTS. dry weight of 9200lbs!!!

And I own a 1/2 ton totota tundra!!!!
Ok well it’s called a 1/2ton but it’s a heavy half. Then I added 2500lb overload springs and a class 5 hitch. The truck is rated for 10,300lbs stock

Here is the biggest reason this works for me. Our normal camping spot 95% of the time is 15 miles from the house on 2 lane roads with no hills and I drive about 45-50 mph!! That lets me sneak by with a little extra weight.

The other big thing is I have accesss to 3 F350’s pretty well any time I need one so for those long trips we are deffinatly using enough truck.

Go for the new truck though. The new diesels are AMAZING!! We have a 16 Ford and a 17 Ford and the 17 is so much nicer it’s crazy.

The 17 is actually a 250 while the 16 is a 350. I pull a trailer daily with both of them that is between 14,500-16000. Can I tell a difference?? Maybe a little more sag in the rear end of the 250. But pulling there is no difference. If you have the option, get the 350. They didn’t have a 350 in the color Dad wanted to he got the 250.

I am concerned dingle wheel will still feel this. The cost difference is not huge to go dual, but will i just also then have too much truck?

Looking for all input opinions, experience with either or both.

Also feel free to laugh at me for putting myself in this. Also feel free to offer condolences for doi ng this it wil clearly hurt the wallet. Doh.

Do you run your truck through a car wash? if so dually is out.. ;o)

if it were me I would look at a 6.2L with 3.42 gears (you can't get 3.73's any more stupid gov) 1/2 ton or a 6.0 with 4.10 gears 3/4 ton... I would stay away from the diesel... well unless you want to take another bath...

your 5.3 has what for gears? 3.23's?

1 tons will require you to have a higher class license to run them in just about any state...

We love our Jayco 32BHDS. I pull it with an 06 GMC Sierra Vortec Max with no problems.

This will have to do

Did not want to live with payment or TV as a daily so this has been added to the fleet. Finding this 97 in very good condition that matches the trailer sealed the deal. Its a 460 with the full banks kit. All new brakes, tires, and shocks. I have ordered p3 brake controller and classV curt. It has a controller and hitch already but i will feel better not knowing how old they are for tbe price it seems worth peace of mind.

Thanks y'all. I am almost as excited as getting the trailer. I may be a little crazy with the 20 yr old gasser but i believe in this generation I have had a couple that I miss a 93 f150 that went to a new owner at 230k and a 351 powered e150 chateau that went to a new owner at 315k. Both of those could have passed in out and drivetrain as 50k miles.

I think you will be fine. Just go over it well. Parts for that generation are readily available and relatively inexpensive. Even if you end up doing some minor repairs, you will still be in good shape.

We had a 3500 Dodge with a Cummins and single rear wheel. It towed our large trailer and toys very well. Since we no longer tow the big trailer I bought a 1500 Chevy. It will move the trailer but I wouldn't want to tow it all over the country like we once did.

Pro Pride hitch (yeah, almost $2400 but when was RVing cheap?) made awesome difference in wind sensitivity. Replaced an Equalizer which is a good hitch too. Caravaned with friends who radioed a request to slow down due to wind issues when I hardly felt a thing. Well worth the $$$s
