Beefing up

Just bought a 2018 SLX 195RB for the layout. New condition, but dome sloppy construction around the queen bed frame, so i bought four very light cedar 4x4s and added some framing which has beefed it right up.

Images show twinning of existing base frame, rebuild of plywood support, and cross-support in base.

Love the trailer!

Looks very good. There are several posts here about reinforced bed plywood/frame. When I did our 24RBS, I used aluminum Angle to save weight. How is it holding up? After I put on the aluminum, I had DW lay on top of the bare plywood and kinda bounce. I got 1/4” of movement, measured by me laying down underneath the bed. Then I put in a cross brace of 2x2” wood and that stopped all the flexing. Jay

Seems good and sturdy

I think the cross members and angle braces stiffened the plywood quite well. I haven’t bounced on it, but I don’t feel any flex laying on it. We just put in a six inch hd foam mattress in to replace the weird batting mattress as well. Also pit in a small oak handle at the foot for lifting/propping.

Aluminum angle is a good option. Wonder how the weight would compare.

I just looked at my post and found out that my total weight gain including wood cross brace and adding a 2x2 piece to the center was 12 pounds. I used all of a 25 foot stick of aluminum angle, 1.5x1.5 inches. I reinforced both ends of my lift cylinders with the same aluminum. My best estimate is I saved about 1/2 the weight of using 2x4 boards. Jay

Welcome to the bed reinforcement club! I’ve done the same, plus added a frame in front to better support the head and put in a couple of 2X2s cross braces to support the thin plywood. Nice and solid now.
