Simple answer is YES you still need a battery. Aside from providing 12 volts to your 12volt stuff, the battery provides a pulse filter for your converter/charger. Without the battery any voltage spike generated either by the source AC voltage or by the normal turning on and off of various appliance will potentially damage your 12volt appliances.

Even a bad battery is a better spike filter than NO battery.

That's what I was wondering, my battery is shot, had to hook up the TT to my truck to be able to raise/lower the power tongue jack. Since I will be on shore power this weekend will I be OK with this mainly discharged battery?

NO, you would not need a battery IF your RV is
plugged in or hard wired to an electrical power source,
However, you would not in the event of a power
outage have back up power by having a charged
battery.

I found out through much troubleshooting that my domestic 3 way fridge will not run unless the battery is hooked up. It doesn't run on propane or 12v when its disconnected. I'm not sure why it needs that loop connected, but I know my does. And it was a pia figuring that out.

My motorhome is an 89, but I think the fridge is 5 years old now.

Don't think anyone has said this, but why is it so much of an issue just to keep a battery installed on your RV? Is it absolutely necessary 100% of the time? NO. Is it very useful some of the time as when you lose shore power? Yes. It also can prevent wear on the converter in some units. Basic batteries do not cost an arm and a leg.
