Anyone added pistons to help lift up the bed to access storeage?

I’ve reinforced the bed frame and added a 3” gel topper to the OEM mattress. So far, even with the extra weight, the original struts lift the bed OK. I have a section of PVC pipe set up as a prop when loading and unloading stuff under there — mainly for the safety of DW. Don’t want it collapsing on her!

Re: VIN on NHTSA site — that’s strange. Mine worked fine. Did you put in the full 17-digit number?

You're welcome. Enjoy your QB, we went all the way out west and stopped at most all of the national parks last year, close to 12,000 miles all total. No problems with the exception of the pantry shelves. What we did is use those adjustable refrigerator bars under the shelves to provide support when loaded up with heavy items such as canned goods. They did the trick!

Our 19RD is the grandfather to the 212. The bed is sideways in the corner, and did come with lift cylinders. I bought a new kit from Hatchlift, that was on clearance at an RV store, which turned out less than the new cylinders separately. The kits come with all the hardware to install from scratch. Here's their website.

Thanks JFR. Our 2017 didn't have any lifts installed or the previous owner removed them. Got a set coming.

What's the concensus on Command type hooks? Best brand, hook style etc. Looking to add some coat hooks by the bathroom door and maybe some towel hooks in the bathroom. May do the over the door hanger thing in the BR instead. We're newbs so y'all can expect more questions like these.

Added coat hooks on the outside bathroom wall. Generic hooks and screws for wet raincoats Same for towel rings inside. There are studs in the wall

I have a 2013 198RD, which is forerunner of 212QB. I call her Mary Poppins - practically perfect in every way!

I prefer not to search for the mini-studs they use and drill holes in the walls if I don’t have to, so I’ve used a number of Command hooks.

In the bathroom, we replaced the towel rings with the Command towel bars and stuck a metal basket under the mirror for cups, deodorant etc. I put another hook on the wall to the left of the toilet. All are brushed nickel to match the fixtures. We put a couple on the walls outside the bathroom for coats or robes and a few inside the cabinet over the kitchen sink to hang mugs or coffee filter baskets. Also a few for hanging art once we are in camp. So, yeah, we love ‘em.

We also hung a metal “hook row” over the outside of the bathroom door to hang a variety of things. (See photo.) I put some self-stick foam weatherstripping on the metal where it touches the wood to keep it from scratching.

The secret I’ve found is to clean the surface well with some rubbing alcohol before applying the sticky backing. Especially on the vinyl wall covering Jayco uses. That made the difference and the hooks have held through cold winters and 110* summers.

Mag: Since you mentioned bathroom mods…be careful of the shelf under the counter to the left of the sink. Like the pantry and some of the other shelves in the rig, they are not well-supported and will not hold a lot of weight without additional bracing. DW piles a lot of stuff in baskets sitting in that space and it was drooping. So, I made a “T” with 1x1s” and angle brace to put in there to support the entire shelf. Much better.

LuckyDuck,

is that the same reinforcement, or similar, to what you did for the pantry and other shelving?

I used 1x1s and 1x2s in the pantry but was a bit pickier on how it looked, since they could be seen. I matched the stain as closely as possible on the bracing boards. In a few places where I used screws on the outside into the bracing, I countersunk and painted over the heads with a brown paint that matched the stain so you don’t see them.

For the most part, 1x1s work pretty well and are plenty sturdy. On the bathroom fix, I built the “T” then worked it under there behind the furnace ducting. It ain’t going anywhere and it will never be seen by anyone but me!

Colby, as promised, some more specifics on the bracing I did for sagging shelves…

In the pantry, I glued 1x1s to the bottom of the shelves and the small rails on the sides for more rigidity. I added 1x2s on the sides to support that and screwed into them from the outside as the walls were barely held in with short staples. I found some craft paint at Michael’s that matched the brown stain to paint the screw heads. (First photo).

Other bracing was needed for the shelf over the bed and the bottom shelf of the right wardrobe. A few countersunk screws took care of that (see photos).

The other spot was the shelf over the dinette. I glued a 1x2 to the left side wall right at the shelf, then screwed the shelf up into it. (Last photo).

Everything is more solid now and we haven’t had any canned goods crashing down!

Batter disconnects

I’m new to the travel trailer world and don’t k ow a lot about the workings of many things. I’m wondering if there is a battery disconnect switch or a way to completely turn the power off?

The only way I know of without adding a disconnect switch is to pull the fuse on the frame at the front of the camper.

Mine didn’t come with a disconnect switch, so I had one put on. Well worth it. Before that, I disconnected the battery cable during the winter, which was a pain.

For those that have added velcro to the seat back cushions, which type/brand velcro did you use?

Jay Flight SLX8 212QB

Hey guys, We picked up our 212QB last week. We really like it. I understand that some of you put in a medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Can you tell me what type it was? I assume that it is small. Thank you in advance.
