Jayflight 21QB - Equal-i-zer Hitch

We bought a Jayflight 21QB and our trailer has a maximum weight of 6,500 lb. with a tongue weight of 772 lb. (11.89% according to Jayco data sheet). Our dealer also sold us the Equal-i-zer’s Integrated 4 Point Sway Control hitch. The hitch has a capacity of 6,000 lb. and 600 lb. max tongue weight. Since we will be adding a second battery which will increase more the tongue weight, should we replace our hitch with a 10,000 lb. hitch instead? They do not manufacture a 8,000 lb. rated hitch. Do you think a 10,000 lb. will be too rigid for the travel trailer and cause some damage or do you have a similar outfit and experienced with it? Thank you

Hitch

We moved to a 2016 23rlsw from a x23b went from a 600/6000 equailizer hitch to the 1000/10,000 equalizer hitch. No problems and thousands of miles on it.

Polariste,

Welcome to JOF

I agree, the 1,000lb rated Equal-i-zer WDH wouldn't be overkill and would be a better match for the JayFlight 21QB in lieu of the 600lb rated WDH. Like any WDH proper adjustment is key to optimizing the WDH.

Ideally one would want the 'loaded' tongue weight to be in the 13% to 15% range of the TT's gross 'loaded' weight.

We bought our 19RD, our dealer installed the 10,000/1000 lb Equalizer. Out TT weighs in at 4,140 lbs. dry, 2,060 lbs. cargo capacity, 6,200 lbs. total, and 530 lbs. hitch weight. It works quite well for us.

Thank you JFlightRisk for your reply. Your TT is about the same weight as ours, we will definitely change our Equalizer hitch for the 10,000 lb.

If all you are adding is a battery. I would check the measurements of my trailer after adding the battery and make sure it is adjust as in this video before buying a new hitch.

Excellent video!!

Are you sure about your tong weight? from the factory my Hitch Weight
485 lbs on a 2018 264BH.

I am using a Equalizer 10K on my camper though, because that is what Equalizer recommended when i called them and gave them specs on my camper. So it is possible your dealer gave you the cheapest possible hitch when you got your camper. that what happen to us. dealer sold us a under rated hitch with only one friction sway and it should have had 2 clearly indicated in the documentation with the hitch. Then we upgraded to a Equalizer 10K. best money i ever spent on that camper.

We are using a 10,000 pound Equal-I-Zer 4 point on 6,500 lb Jay Feather and have not had any issues and it does not seem overly rigid, this hitch came off of a 4,000 lb trailer and it did not seem too rigid on that either, overkill yes but not rigid. Dealer throws them in and when I asked why such a big hitch his reply was so when you trade up you will already have it. Sold light trailer bought new one from a different dealer.

I have a 2013 198RD, which is almost same trailer. I pull it with a 2012 Avalanche, I have a 10,000 WDH and it has been fine.

Smile

Thanks to all for your comments and replies, I have contacted the dealer and we have an agreement to upgrade our Equal-i-zer system for a 10,000 lb. They will charge me $100 for the upgrade/installation. The exchange will be done in the spring to our satisfaction because the dealership is located at 300 miles from our place.

Again thank you very much and it is nice to learn from other people experience! Seasons Greetings to all!
