Spoiler for truck rooftop

Does anyone have experience with a rooftop spoiler for their truck. I’ve been told that they can save a gallon or two on your mpg, but that was just one person who had just bought his recently. Seems like they might also cut down on the direct bug hits. Experiences?

Studies that I have seen didn't result in any notable 'mpg' advantages other than minimizing bug contact of the FW, TT, etc., front cap. The distance between the spoiler and the trailer also was an issue.

One study noted that TV spoilers (wind deflectors) aren't large enough to deflect the air effectively around the length of the FW, TT, etc., thus impeding in any measurable 'mpg' savings.

I had a wind spoiler on my first tow rig in the 1980s.

It worked! It spoiled the looks of the truck.

My mom and dad had one on their Ford pulling their 5er. It was a waste of money and a waste of my time putting it on and taking it off.

I have a cap on mine. Leaving the window open gives me like 25-30% better mileage! Really 8-9mpg closed and 11-13 open I tested several times. window is about 70 degrees to wind really cuts down the wind hitting a big box!

Wind deflector inventor created a need for a product and then marketed it. Just like the guy that invented stabilizers for slideouts.

Spoiler

I used a spoiler on my Chevy 1/2 ton short bed with the 5.3 and i gained .5 MPG consistently - but when I upgraded to a Silverado 2500 HD long bed with the Duramax and the Allison the spoiler only increased my mileage by .1 MPG so I quit using it after 8-10 trips - I was pulling the same 5th wheel ( 8800 lbs ) but was not working the truck near as hard - The 1/2 ton had a 9200 lb towing capacity vs 17,500 lb on the 3/4 ton and a pleasure to drive - 10.5 MPG vs 12.2 MPG with larger truck.Les

Thanks folks! Y’all just saved me some money and a dose of disappointment. I love this group. I think I’ll spend that money to help pay for an observation camera for the back end.

I wonder if the ridges help with stability.
