Lowering roof

Have a 2015 10SD. When roof is raised, seems to sway. When lowering roof, We have problem with one front arm not wanting to go down in sync with other 3. Sometimes have to raise and lower a few times to get it to drop down with the other 3. Always same arm having issue. Is this normal, or maybe a problem with something in the lift arm? Not raising too high, barely raising high enough to put metal covers on lift arms.

Hi, and welcome to JOF!

It does sound like a problem, but depends on how pronounced the effect is. Kind of hard to say without seeing. A little bit of sway is normal until the posts fully extend.

A few things it could be, but most are difficult to check. Easiest thing to try is to use a bit of spray silicone or other non-oily lubricant on the posts (or the one post anyway) to see if they are simply binding a bit.

It is possible that the cable is not adjusted properly for that post, causing it to jump a bit. The adjustment is easy, but the adjuster can be difficult to access (it is usually hidden behind the paneling on the wall with the winch). It could also be a broken or detached pulley causing the issue, which begins to get a bit more difficult to figure out. Accessing the mechanism behind the walls is not always easy, but there are usually a few spots you can observe inside of cabinets etc. If you have access to the cables, just check to see if one is at all loose, they generally have a fair bit of tension on them; and you should keep tension on them when the roof has retracted by winding "up" a couple of ratchets after latching to prevent them jumping out of position.

Good luck with the diagnosis!

ETA: Don't forget that Jayco has a long warranty on the lift mechanism, used to be lifetime, but I think it is shorter now on newer units like your '15 although longer than the 2 years. Yours should still be covered, so consider having a dealer work on it if it is an issue.

Are there any other issues that may have caused this as well? I did the troubleshooting for the cables as you recommended, so I wanted to make sure that I was going about all of these things the right way before just giving up on the whole thing in the first place. Thanks for your help ahead of time!

Are your Jack Stands up or down? Jack stands must be up when you raise the roof, and lower the roof. The body needs to flex, if it can't, good chance one of the corners will jamb.

Years ago I had one that bound up. I crawled under and saw that the pulleys were corroded. I lubed up each on (the axel of each pully) and I was good to go. I repeated each season before any long trips.

Inspect the wire on the winder if you can see it for abraded or damaged wire.

As others said, use dry lube on the posts.

Do not put your stabilizer jacks down before raising the roof or lowering it.
