It's interesting that you mentioned about not needing a cart. Two of my friends stayed there last year. One stayed in the cabins and said they wished that they would have rented a cart. The one that stayed in their trailer said that their spot was just a short walk to the bus stop and they really didn't need it. I'd rather be safe than sorry, but my luck will be that I rent one and I'll never use it.

We are still weighing our options between Fort Wilderness and going back to Wilderness Lodge. So please, keep your details coming everyone.
Believe me, if you stay at the Campground and will be going to all the parks every day..... You will not need a golf cart. Busses run all throughout and the stops are a short walk. We have 3 kids and never wished we had a golf cart.

Thanks. We travel with 2 kids. We will likely be eating all of our meals in the parks/resorts also. We just did our dining wish list (I put it on a spreadsheet since I'm anal that way) 18 restaurants so far and there are still a couple that we will likely add. So, our time in the campground will undoubtedly be limited.

For us the cart was well worth it. After a long day walking many miles at the parks it was nice to get off the boat or bus late at night and hop on the cart and drive back to the trailer. And on the way out in the morning not having to wait for the internal bus to get to the settlement or boat docks. True you don't need a cart but heck its vacation and golf carts are fun to drive through all the loops looking at all the various RVs everyone has, I would not pay Disney prices but for about $200 it was fun.

I'm assuming that those of you who rent from an outside company that you are responsible for bringing it back correct?

It all depends on timing with the outside rentals. We got lucky someone was leaving the day we arrived so we just picked up the cart in the cart parking area near the settlement. On checkout day we also just dropped it off where it was picked up due to the next person coming in that day.

In our case, yes. The cart return process was the reverse of the pick up. The cart rental company will provide all the pick up/return details.

I have driven through the CG several times and it's one that is on our list for sure.

What is the policy for visitors to a site?

Not a problem having visitors, they have to park at the Outpost and take the internal bus to your campsite.

Thanks. What about using the pools with us? Do they charge for that? Is there a limit of time allowed at the outpost? I know overnight is a no no if it exceeds max guests.

Should not be a problem getting guests into the pool area. Some resorts have a three hour visit limit for parking but its usually enforced only during major holidays. You can list up to ten people on your reservation even if they are not staying with you, then they get unlimited parking time since they are now a guest and not a visitor.

I just wanted to take a moment to update this thread. We just completed all of our reservations for our Ft. Wilderness trip next summer. We decided on a Preferred site.

Thank you to all who contributed to this thread. Even though we have been to Disney many times, we are really looking forward to our 1st Fort Wilderness experience. Thanks again everyone

That's awesome!
We are also starting to tentatively plan our Disney trip to the Fort.
We've been before and have stayed in the value resorts, but we're looking forward to trying the Fort.
If you aren't a member already, I recommend DisBoards for Disney planning and discussions.

We just booked our Ft W adventure. The bride and I stayed here a couple of years back and loved it, returning this June with the G’son (oh yeah, his parents are coming too). We’ve visited WDW 5 times total IIRC and I have to say Ft W is my fav.
Hope you all have a great (Magical) visit!

Thanks. We've always stayed at either Animal Kingdom Lodge, Wilderness Lodge, or over at Coronado Springs.

I've never looked at DisBoards but we will take a look. This is the point where I turn over the rest of the planning to my wife and my oldest daughter. They always book the dining reservations and fastpasses.

Thank you. We've ventured over to Ft. Wilderness over the last couple of years for the Hoop Dee Doo Review. Kind of got the itch to try the resort just by walking around a little and checking out the place when we went over for dinner.

Everyone I've talked to that has stayed there has just loved it and I am expecting our experience to be the same.

While I'm thinking about it, has anyone done Mickey's Backyard BBQ? Any feedback?

Some friends of mine have and they liked it. It is outdoors, so the weather may affect it.

We've done it 3 times and love it. Twice DW and I were by ourselves, love watching the kids having fun.. We have reservations again in March when son and family are down. It has a lot of character interation with the kids. I think it is only Tues, Thur amd Sat. It is a buffett and umdercover.

Prefer it over Hoop Dee Doo Revue.
