Purchased on paper 2021 .. recently discovered its a 2020

Hello,
Less than a week ago, I purchased a (on paper) 2021 Jayco Precept. I recently discovered the registration papers list it as a 2020. I went online and found a VIN lookup and sure as I am writing this .. its a 2020.

Has this ever happened to anyone? I am waiting for dealership to open. I either want full return of money or a true 2021.

Welcome feedback

You're good. The Precept is 2021..... the 2020 year is the Ford F53 Chassis. My Precept says the same as yours.... Ford = 2020 and Jayco Precept = 2021 (bought in Oct, built in Sept 2020) Your registration should say 2021 Jayco Precept

Thank you for your reply. The registration says 2020 ... that is my concern. They did a bait and switch at the last minute on us. We waiting 2 weeks for delivery ..was coming from Ohio and on day 13 told us they couldn't get the one in Ohio, but found one in Florida and simply required our signature to update the registration. Sales receipt shows 2021 / now the new title/registration shows 2020 ...

As mkassab said, many rigs are built on a chassis from the previous year. It's the dealers's responsibilty to get it titled correctly.

With that said some states only go by the chassis yr on how the registration reads. Even the Ohio rig may have been on a 2020 chassis even though a 2021 production run.

Here's a pic of my vehicle stickers.... compare to yours.

Pic 1 is a Ford Sticker and clearly says 7/20 and the sticker (also from Ford) to the right also says 2020 Model.
Pic 2 is the Jayco sticker that says Date: 10/20

Since I bought my Precept in TN and live in NC.... I registered it myself. I received two different MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin).... you only get MSOs if the vehicle was never titled. The Ford MSO said 2020 and the Jayco MSO said 2021. NC uses the "final" build/manufacture MSO for the registration year... so, mine says 2021.

Hope this helps you sort it out.

Ford manufacture date is 07/20, only 5 months old. It is a 2021 model, right?

Yes, Ford F53 chassis with the new 7.3L V8 date of manufacture is 7/20 and the Jayco coach in 10/20.... so 3 months total time to complete the Precept 34G 2021 year model

They must do it different on the Super C’s with Freightliner chassis, our chassis is a 2017 and is a 2018.5 model but all the paperwork including the title and registration say 2018.

Hoseit,

I agree with above. We have a have a 2020 Precept 31UL and it's build on a 2019 chassis and the registration says 2019 because the vehicle is a 2019 chassis. I felt like you, I thought what the heck? It took me a while to wrap my head around it too. They are not bait and switching. Congrats on your new RV.

I agree with the chassis vs finished vehicle and how they can differ in model year, but to me bottom line is you need to check the build dates on the stickers. If they changed vehicles mid-stream, then the new one could very well be a 2020 leftover. I assume you have not closed on on this purchase yet, since you have not layed eyes on the RV. If you have not, then you still have time to negotiate and back out of the deal.

To me the important things would be manufacture dates and mileage. If its been sitting on someone's lot for a while I would take that into consideration as well. If its a 2020, then I would expect some compensation back as you mentioned. I would closely check the systems too as minor changes take place between years and you may not get what you expect in terms of options.

Title date

We live in Missouri and they register motor homes by date of chassis. We have a 2018 31UL but it is registered as a 2017. Some states go by chassis date and some go by date of unit. This is a very common practice. We have a 2018 unit that has a 2017 chassis. It is absolutely no concern on our part.

My 2021 showed as 2020 in Smog system

I just had to get a smog check done on my 2021 Jayhawk because California has to find ways to make everything painful and take your last nickel.... rant over.

However when the technician entered it into the state database as a 2021 he could not find it. I was about to be sent to the smog referee when he said hold up lemme check one more thing.

He then entered it as a 2020 model year vehicle and it was there and he was able to complete the smog check.

I believe the reason is cause the vehicle manufacturer (Ford) built it as a 2020 model and the states have that VIN registered for that model year. But the motorhome manufacturer (Jayco), built their 2021 model on that chassis.

Especially with the manufacturers being super backed up its possible the chassis was bought and are in their possession well before they complete the motorhome build part.

In the end i don’t know that it matters because warranties start at the time you take ownership of the new vehicle. The important this for me is that i got the 7.3 liter V-8 which i did.

I purchased a brand new Jayco Precept because I listened to advice from this forum when I should have really done my own research. I ended up losing a whole bunch of money by not paying $120 for a 1/2 hr consultation with an attorney.
Unfortunately you’re not going to get much sympathy from this forum because everybody thinks they are an expert in everything to do with RV ‘ s
Expert advice costs money and this is a chat room not expert room. Good luck.

I ran into the same thing when I purchased a 2019 Redhawk 27N. I complained to the Consumer Affairs office and they told me that the 2018 chassis should not show up on the title but should be registered as a 2019 Jayco. I went back to the dealer and they told me it was a mistake by their title department. The title department had not turned in the proper form. So they redid it and now my title shows it as a 2019 Jayco.

Reply to title as different year

That just means that Jayco bought the chassis in 2020 but they assembled it for the 2021 sale. We thought we bought a new 2012 in 2012 but our engine compartment was bought early 2011. I questioned it to, as when we bring in for service at Ford, they list it as a 2011 but our dmv registration says 2012. I was told what I typed in above. Yeah, it doesn’t seem correct, but I guess they save by buying the chassis in an earlier year, I’ve heard that they can go as much as two years earlier on the chassis without getting into trouble. Doesn’t seem right, but just another way to make more money.

Been happening for years. Since it is an incomplete chassis most states, not all, base it on the year the house was built.

It happens all the time by all RV manufacturers. In your case, the e450 chassis is a 2020 and the Jayco coach is a 2021. You purchased a 2021 Jayco, not a 2021 e450. RV manufacturers can use chassis that are up to two years old.

Our 2014 Greyhawk is built on a 2013 Ford chassis. While the RV is a 2014, the rig is registered and licensed as a 2013. In AZ the model year is based exclusively on the chassis not the RV part. It’s a fact of life of how the industry works. I wonder how many of you know that n the late sixties and early seventies when I sold Jeep’s, Wagoneers and Jeep trucks when the new model year rolled around the dealer just retitledeverything as the current model year. While most trucks and Wagoneers sold within the model year, we had some oddball Jeep CJ’s that were in fact three or four years old that we sold as the current model year. It was my understanding that this was also common in pickups until just a few years prior to my encountering it in Jeep’s.

Title issue

Dealer says it’s a 2021. State says it’s a 2020.
Guess what. It’s a 2020. I went thru this. State of Florida consumer protection secretary said this is false advertising. If it’s a titled vehicle it is supposed to be advertised and sold as the year of the title description. 2020 is the title year. I walked.
