Porcelain v. Plastic Toilets?

I would think they'd use plastic exclusively for weight concerns. Honestly, I don't see a huge benefit of porcelain compared to plastic. Maybe someone can elaborate on why but for the life of me, can't understand the benefits.

I believe cleaning is one easy reason. Porcelain is far easier to clean than plastic. Don't recall the last time I saw a plastic toilet in a house.

Because houses have better support, don't move and are used a lot more. I can clean my RV toilet as good as my home toilet.

Back to my cleaning preference of porcelain over plastic. All things being equal, you don't see plastic in a house. If there was one advantage of plastic, other than price, you would see plastic in houses. You don't and won't.

Does anyone know the difference in the weight between the two? I suspect that most RV manufactures try to limit the weight in the RV where ever they can and not that one single thing will make a lot of difference, but a lot of things cumulatively will. ~CA

We had a porcelain toilet in an older rig. Only thing I didn't like was the bowl was a bit shallow.

We just purchased a used 2019 toy hauler (not Jayco) to live in while building our house and it had a Dometic 300 plastic toilet in it. If you haven't researched those they leak internally. One week of ownership and the camper started smelling like the line of porta-potties at the fair. Went and purchased a Dometic 310 porcelain bowel and removal/install was less than 10 minutes. Like others have said, use it and if it becomes an issue replace it.

I think the reason plastic isn't in more homes (yet) is the lack of durability. The china bowls are much more durable and are better to withstand the trials of everyday use. RV manufacturers always have weight as a concern and obviously, porcelain weighs more than plastic. Hence why they use plastic toilets exclusively. In a nutshell, I think the change is just preference. They both work identical. Yes, porcelain is easier to clean. I've had plastic in my Eagle since new and honestly, it's pretty darn clean. But if my plastic toilet gets to the point to where it doesn't come clean, I have bigger problems.

I replaced our plastic one with a porcelain one. Not as much because of the plastic but for the elongated bowl. A extra bonus is the seat is a household seat, solid and stronger than the plastic seat. If you ever need a new seat, just get it from a hardware store. Also got the spray nozzle with it. It’s nice.

I don't think RV manufacturers use plastic exclusively. My Starcraft came with porcelain.

My plastic toilet is a 2007 toilet. I just rebuilt it for less than $40.00 and it works fine. We have a hybrid and I am rebuilding the trailer. We like to keep it light and easy to repair. I will stick with plastic.

Previous motorhomes have had plastic, my current Seneca has porcelain and I like it much better. I'd go for it.

I have a 2020 27 U and did replace the toilet with porcelain. Is more comfortable and easier to clean. I had to make a small cut out in the step behind the toilet and change the tubing a bit to get it all to fit in the space. Worth it to me - but certainly not necessary. Will send picture if you get serious about it.

Swap? No. Unwarranted effort and expense.
Replace? Maybe. If you break your plastic toilet, then replace it, but be wary of weight. The difference may seem insignificant until you hit a CAT Scale. If you're floating right up near the limit when loaded for bear and traveling wet, a few extra pounds may be a concern.
I'm 250#, and plastic has taken my abuse for many years...since 2014.

Maybe they started putting them in the new models...idk. I know for years you could only get plastic in a new unit.

We pull our expandable all over the country. Our Jayco needs to be kept light. We hit the scale with our trailer packed for snow bird. We hit the scale 3040 lbs. Our pull SUV is a 2020 Ford Explore 2.3 eco boost. Pulls perfect! We can pull 5000 lbs. mileage is important. Car stays in. The power band lighter. We rebuilt the trailer keeping weight in mind. The plastic toilet was easy to remove and rebuild. Cheap easy rebuild. We had a my porcelain toilet in our 5 wheel. That was a very nice trailer. The expandable is in a much different class of RV. If you don't worry about weight that do it. I keep MPG and weight in mind.

We have owned both types and if I bought a new rig the toilet would be one of my first upgrades to porcelain if it had plastic. Their sturdier, easier to clean, hold the seat better, and well worth the small weight increase. God bless y’all and happy camping 😀
