2022 37K Camper Door Opens When Driving

Hello everyone, we just purchased a 2022 37K and while we were bringing it home from the dealership, the camper door kept open while we were driving down the highway - about 5 times. Called the dealership and they said that Jayco recommends using the deadbolt when in motion. Anyone else experience this? Any fixes?

Thanks.
Joe

I always use the deadbolt when traveling. I have heard of this happening several times from others. The deadbolt is just an extra layer of security as the body flexes and twists going down the road.

On my 23B, we keep the deadbolt secured when traveling. We boondock most of the time. There has been a few times that I just closed the door after filling the water tank, a few miles from camp, to find the door wide open when looking down the mirror. I now always deadbolt the door when in motion.

When you close the door, does it click twice, like a car door? If not, that likely is part of the problem. This is my second coach with a Dexter door and both of them needed adjustment to get them to close (two clicks) and have the deadbolt work properly.

First off, if its not clicking twice, that means the latch pin needs to go outwards from the coach. Examine the latch pin. If you see scrapes on the top or bottom, it likely needs to go up or down to line up with the center line of the latch. Mine also required the pin to have a shim (washer) added between it and the door frame so the wider head would clear the inside of the latch.

If your deadbolt doesn’t engage properly, that likely means your door isn’t all the way shut and needs some adjustment. There was another thread I saw elsewhere (on JOF, I believe, just not here), and someone had some good pictures of the pin, shim and latch. I’ll see if I can find it and update this post.

I know I mentioned this during the PDI and they supposedly “fixed” it, but just adjusted the pin so it only clicked once and didn’t resolve the actual issues with it. I think the tech had no idea as to how the latch is supposed to work.

I agree with the deadbolt. I always use that as well.

Always use the dead bolt when traveling, in my opinion. (and always lock your cargo doors to insure you can pull on them...had a those suckers fly open more than a few times in the early days).

I'm not totally sure how many different doors types can be installed on Seneca's, as some trim packages are upgraded, and that may include door. However, my 2021 37K has some of the Prestige package upgrade, but not all of them. I have manual locks and doors all around. Furthermore, mine has a pretty cruddy latch system on the entry door, that required me to install some washers on the bolt, so that I can tune the exact height of that post, to grab the door and force the best seal. You may experience that the primary latch will catch, but there will be massive play in the door seal, even with the deadbolt locked. I haven't found a final solution yet, but for now I have the spacers in place and hand tighten the latch post when it vibrates loose and it will suck in to a point.

Why they can't come up with a door/latch system that seals well from the inside, without slamming or pulling hard inwards, I'll never know!

Hello. A couple of quick things to check, if you haven't already done so... Make sure the door latch is lubricated sufficiently so it easily backs away and returns properly when closing the door. Also, check the weather stripping on the door frame- specifically several inches above and below the door jam to make sure it's not fighting the door from closing/seating properly. Not a good way to start off, given how much money people are paying for these chariots! Hope it's an easy fix for you!! Happy Trails...

Dead bolt any time the unit moves. I had the door pop open the first month I had the unit and ever since then the unit doesn't move unless I verify the door is closed and dead bolted.

Yes! Happened once to me, I had thought it was locked. I always use the deadbolt before any drive.
