Drip Rail / Rain Gutter rust?

My 2016 Jayco TT 32BHDS has a couple of streaks of rust on the outside. Looking at it closer, it seems to be running from under the drip rail/rain gutter on the top of the RV. When looking at it closely, it looks like jayco didn't seal the underside of the drip rail in random spots, so I guess that is the cause.

So I'm going to buy some Geocel 28100V and seal the spots they missed. I am wondering if I should do anything else, like spray some anti rust spray in a few days before and then wipe the surface clean, or once it is sealed do you think the rust will stop?

Would be coming from the screws, rail is aluminum. Pull out the screw and put caulking in the hole before reinserting.

The screw is covered by the drip rail. There is no getting to it other than ripping the rail off, which ain't gonna happen.

It was getting a little dark so you can't see, but the rust streak comes out from under the driprail, not from the driprail. Most of the driprail is caulked on the bottom, this part isn't (about 4 inches).

Given that water flows "downhill", except possibly when towing, If the water infiltration is coming from the top then sealing the bottom might trap more water.

apr1967,

I assume your White Hawk is out of warranty (?).

I would confirm with your RV dealership or contact Jayco directly on the correct assembly procedure for the area in question, because it can very depending on type of sidewall/roof material utilized (fiberglass, EPDM, etc.). Knowing the specific OEM application areas of Dicor caulk and/or Butyl putty tape may be helpful.

I had a major issue with my Filon sidewall/TPO roof joint issue associated with moisture intrusion with my '05' Eagle (while under warranty) that produced similar symptoms as your pic reflects. 'One' of the issues was associated with caulk trapping moisture behind/above the drip rail which also acted as an assembly rail for the TPO roofing material.

Your situation may be a minor issue, but make sure your fix doesn't overlook and/or create a bigger problem.

Just food for thought.

Bob

So as it turns out I was kinda wrong and right.

The head of every screw holding the drip rail on is rusty as hell. However the only rust on the side is where they failed to caulk the underside.

So I am going to caulk it and ignore it, knowing that Jayco did a cr@p job and that this driprail will fail and delam down the road.

May want to consider running a fresh bead of caulk along the top edge of the drip rail where it meets the EPDM roofing material.

Although an extreme case, this is what happened to my '05' Eagle within the 2-year warranty:

This is what worries me: Things that you can’t see without xray-vision. I really need to know how to spot problems before they get bad!!!

I would be very worried that the rusted screws are letting water into the wall/roof edge.

If that occurs than really bad stuff could be going on inside.

I suggest you remove the screws one at a time. Then replace with new, preferably stainless steel ones with caulk squirted into the hole before screwing them in.

Caulking the bottom of the rail will trap the water getting in and keep it behind the rail. Where can it go it is trapped? Inside the roof/wall is the only place I can think of.

After the new screws I would OSI Quad Seal the top of the rail. Leave the bottom open to dry out.

Not worried. I pulled the screw, its just the head that is rusting. And I intend to trade this in a year and not look at Jayco again. But if I were keeping it that is probably the route I would go.
