Safety Alert

Safety checks are the name of the game. I got lax and here is the result. No major damage but the opportunity was there. No injuries and no damage to my TV. Did not seat the coupler all the way before I locked it down. Will not happen again. If anyone is interested and want the details, call 803 345 0658.Click image for larger version

Dang, talk about luck it stopped where it did. I had it happen to a boat once but the chains caught it thankfully.

Call me weird, but I have always looked under the coupler to make sure it is locked under the ball - utility trailers, car haulers, boat trailers and our TT.

It drives me crazy because I'm borderline OCD when it comes to things like this but I suppose I could always have worst behaviors.

Glad everything turned out OK.

Glad to hear everyone is safe and only minor damage to the RV. It is brave from you to mention it on this forum.

For the newbies: always lower the ball and lock it. Then raise it and install the WDH bars. At least you know then that the ball is in locked position.

I think the hooks holding the chains to the truck broke. The right chain was on the TT chassis minus the hook. The left chain only had about 4 links still attached to the TT. It burned off at that point. The foot of the electric jack was burned off up to the pin that holds it on the shaft. It guess that happened when it skidded on the concrete bridge surface and the asphalt until the front part of the TT hit the dirt. The TT brakes did'nt lock when the breakaway cable came loose. The switch holder was missing with only the bracket was in place. I replaced the switch and checked the TT brakes and they work. The TT moved about six inches and then locked up and stopped truck. We were very lucky in many many ways and it served as a good wake up call. If the TT had been 1/2" closer to the guard rail it would have damaged the whole right side. As it was I only had a couple of minor creases in the metal and some paint scratches on the skirting. If it hadn't stopped when it did it would have rolled over the embankment which was steeper that the photo depitics.

Yeah that's how I always do it too. Always paranoid about that. Good to hear all is OK.

Wow, that must have been scary riding that one out thru the rear view mirror. Did a Tow Truck help you get it back on level pavement so you could hook up again?
