tow vehicle question

Hi I own a 2017 GMC sierra and just wanted some feed back on whether to install air bags or have helper springs put in . I tow a 2017 Jayco White Hawk 24RKS and would like a little more support when towing . Thanks for your input.

Firestone Airbags. You get what you pay for.

Another vote for air bags. I like the fact that they can be adjusted depending on load.

I have always had Air Lift Airbags in all my trucks. I have the on board compressor setup so I can adjust as needed.

I used Roadmaster Active Suspension on my old Sierra, and it made a significant difference even when unloaded. I was able to reduce body roll significantly, but the smooth ride remained intact. When I was loaded out, the truck behaved much better as well.

That being said, I like the idea of air bags for their adjustability. You can put them just where you need them whenever you need.

But then the passive nature of the RAS was attractive too. I adjusted them twice while I owned that truck. Other than that it was a "set it and forget it" system.

I just put Timbrens on my F-150 for towing a nose heavy 29-foot TT. We're on our first trip with the Timbrens. I think i need to adjust my WDH, but there is a notable improvement with the stance of the truck.

tow vehicle question

Hi everyone thank you so much for your input on airbags or helper springs , sounds like there are pros and cons to both . Seems like more people are leaning towards airbags , but the input is great and gives me something to think about . Thank you to those who responded to my question.

I recently installed SumoSprings. I bought the 1500 lb springs and mounted them 1" off the axle so the unloaded ride is completely unaffected. Road testing today actually. Report to follow....

Both Timbrens and SUMO will have a tendency for harsh ride. All they are is extended bump stops that have contact with the axle while loaded. Air springs and a properly loaded trailer are the best bet IMO.

When properly installed Timbrens don’t touch the axle until the TV gets loaded enough to make them touch.
The description of them being extended bounce stops is pretty correct. They’re simple but gave me the results I wanted (reduce the TV squat).
Unloaded there’s no difference in ride quality, it’s a 1T truck so it’s rough when empty but I bought it to tow a 13k lb 5th and I love the way it does that.

AirLift Air bags

I guess I’m the odd ball here because I recently installed the AirLift 5000 airbags on my F-250 and aren’t happy with them at all. It took away the decent ride my truck had while solo and seems to be aiding my TT in beating us to death going down the road. I realize at 11,000lbs, my 2015 Eagle is nearing the top limits of my truck, but I expect better control and ride. I think the stiffness of the bags offsets any dampening the leaf springs might help with. Not trying to offend anyone with this post. It’s just MY opinion. At this point, I’m thinking about removing the air bags. I’ll try a few more adjustments first.

"... TT is beating us to death going down the road..."

"... stiffness of the bags offsets any dampening the leaf springs might help with."

Those statements made me wonder... How old is your truck and how many miles on your shock absorbers?

Great question! The truck is a 2011 with just over 100,000 miles. It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to replace the shocks.
