Always take any Snopes statement with a grain of salt.
In my own Fact checking, the quote could be anywhere from $7,000 to $35,000. GM states life expectancy to be around 100,000 miles.
What is not normally mentioned is that GM expects a 30% reduction in storage capacity of the battery over that lifetime. Can't even imagine a 30% drop in fuel capacity in any of our current Tow vehicles. Example: 35gal to 23.5 gal would put quite a damper on our ranges

The cobalt and other precious metals are extracted and the remainder is used as fillers in concrete and other construction materials. Funny how people who would otherwise be okay with burning coal in an i.c.e.,if possible, all the sudden become converts to the green new deal when it comes to ev battery disposal. I'm personally not a candidate for an ev, but then I wasn't a candidate for cassette tapes to replace 8 tracks, or CD's, to replace cassettes, or streaming music to replace CD's. Yesterday while walking on the indoor track I listened to music streamed from my smartphone, which has more technology compacted into a 3"x6" wafer than the Apollo moon mission, via bluetooth to Apple Air Pods. I doubt if I'd feigned evironmental angst over the disposal of all those 8 track tapes it would have slowed down that progress either.

California just issued an "Emergency Flex Alert" today because of the intense heat wave. Among the recommended recommendations is no AC and no charging of electric vehicles from 4-9 PM! Expected to continue the alert through the holiday weekend.

As a Californian let me see if I can shine some light on this question. California State Government does not recognize intelligent questions about this subject.Therefore they don’t have to answer it. All you need to know is we are saving the planet, We are saving the children, we are saving the whales , we are saving the forests and any other darn thing that needs to be saved! That's true! But from what I have seen the batteries are so big that a change would require a major mechanical effort.

Perhaps you mean practical for long distance travel? It's kinda difficult to get more practical for local ev's than plugging it in when you get home each night or at one of the many ev charging stations popping up everywhere you look. Too, I rather doubt every major car maker on the planet is tooling for ev mfg'ing because they're impractical. I don't imagine when the Model A debuted,
there was a gas station on every corner. Besides, the more ev's on the road the less demand there will be for gas, which means it'll cost me less to run my i.c.e.

Yes, indeed they are heavy. Maybe one day they will come up with a liquid that will have a lot more power potential than batteries and can be easily pumped into a vehicle...
