Exactly. Buy an electric car to avoid using gas then charge it with electricity produced by a fossil fuel burning power plant.

Fast Lane Truck did a tow test of an electric SUV towing a 4,500 lbs trailer. The range went down by 2/3 from 325 miles to 120 miles. You end up driving for 2 hours then stopping to charge for an hour. There is still a lot of work to be done not only with respect to the vehicle but charging stations (increase dramatically) and charging time (decrease dramatically).

I agree with the "not pretty" assessments, but for those of us who get electricity not from a fossil fuel source, (most of ours is hydro, though a bit of coal that is being phased out in favor of wind and solar) it would by nice to reduce how much we pollute. Once these perform as well and go as far, I'll gladly make the switch.

Range???

Payload and towing capacity are impressive. But what about range? How far can it tow a trailer, and how long are you stuck charging it before starting the next leg of your trip? TFL Truck on YouTube has done a few interesting videos on the limits of the Model 3.

You could hook the Tesla up to your TT generator while you are going down the road and let it charge up as you drive.

One place is says 14,000 pounds, in another 7500 lbs. Maybe down hill for 6.5 feet.

+On TV they said 450 miles range. Here they say 250 miles without a load.

It's called "puffing." Kinda when a used car salesman says this car is in superb condition. Nothing wrong and only driven be a 70 year old retired nun 5 miles each way to Mass on Sundays.

Funny how that happens...

Any idea how much pollution is created by manufacturing those battery packs?? and that's before the cost/pollution to keep recharging them.

The Listed 500 Mile range is unloaded with one passenger (For the 3 Motor AWD). Does not say what the range of one loaded with 14K pounds. I would guess 1/2 that range depending on if its hill country or Kansas lol.

Also in the Cold, the Batteries will not last near as long.

Its all just hype and it has not passed any DOT requirements as of yet that I know of. Notice that all the videos of the vehicle is either on a test track or out on the dirt. If it was DOT approved already, you would see videos of them on the streets instead of test tracks.

Actually we are closer than many think. John B Goodenough is at it again and has discovered a new stored energy source. If you were not familiar with his discovery ,he and his team invented lithium batteries. Now he claims that a glass battery is in the works that 5 times better than lithium in all ways. Resources, change time, distance travel on a charge etc. i am talking 1000 mile range on a charge in next few year EVs. Face the facts, the petro vehicles have no more room for efficiency as far as range and performance.

I truly believe there are smart folk that will greatly improve the EV in the next decade.
But the life cycle impact on the environment is still horrendous
Glass battery sounds like it could help the lithium mining disaster
But they need to be recyclable.
And the electrovoltaic cell is a long way from real efficiency so the EV will really be coal powered for a long time

The fact is, petro vehicles have lots of space for more efficiency and improvement. When the manufactures are in bed with the oil companies, there's no reason to improve.

If EVs get any foothold in the market, (they're only at 2% NOW), you'll see big changes in fuel efficiency in petro vehicles.

EV's being main stream is still a dream....

JB Straubel At Tesla says their (Tesla) battery pack is 99.9% recyclable, Tesla is already planning on recycling them. They are very much aware of all the environmental concerns and are on top of it. Long term plan is for their Nevada Gigafactory to be solar powered.
I haven’t heard a peep from any other EV manufacturers concerning their recycling program for their battery packs.
Be weary of those who are negative towards Tesla, chances are they’ve never driven a Tesla and have gotten their information from Tesla naysayers.
Tesla EV’s are not on the same par as other EV, from any manufacturer.
Hopefully their Truck will set a new standard. We will see.

What would you expect JB Straubel to say? It's years away from any pack that will need recycling. He'll be long gone before then..

Oh, wait, he's already gone, stepped down as CTO last Summer...

and, he owns a recycling company... imagine that...

I’ll admit it, I’m a Tesla naysayer, I’ll keep my diesel!

How do you even know that the electric source you are tapping into these days gets its power from a fossil fuel power plant? There are about 60 nuclear power plants in the US and an increasing number of wind turbines adding to the supply. The number of coal plants in the US has deceased greatly over the years: https://www.eia.gov/electricity/annu...epa_04_01.html
