2018 Jayco Greyhawk 29MV (Ford E-450) - we recently averaged 7.5 MPG and 67 MPH on a trip with the generator and two ACs running (not towing).

You don’t put gas in these things: you put in “fun juice.”

Well, I could add up the 32 receipts for gallons of gas used and divide it into the miles traveled to see.

Our 2014 Greyhawk 31FK gas mileage has ranged from 7.7 (strong headwind) to 9.1. It averages 8.5 when we set the cruise at 62 MPH. We do not tow a car.

Gas mileage and RVs in the same discussion?

Our ScanGauge reads 99.9 MPG when going downhill with a tail wind. So that makes up for when it reads 5.5 MPG going up the same hill.

Our last 7 fill ups. These miles were put on in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, pulling a 2016 Chevy Equinox Toad. Average is 7 MPG.

So somewhere between 7-9 seems about the norm. I just like to know an honest answer of what to expect I don’t want to get a huge surprise expecting 12-14 like the salesman said.

I would check it just for curiosity's sake if nothing else. Some of them are pretty close, some aren't.

As for mileage, we were out boondocking this weekend on the beach. I drove onto the island with essentially a full tank of fuel (less than 30 miles on a full tank). Ran the generator for about 40 hours straight sitting still (I also ran it in transit to and from; overall the genny ran from Friday at around 4:00 until Sunday around 5:00 non-stop). Used about 1/3 of a tank of fuel. So, ~30 miles into ~20 gallons = 1.5 mpg! Not so bad actually!! LOL!!

"Fun Juice" is absolutely right!

This last trip I plugged in my ODBII bluetooth transmitter and monitored using my Torque app on my phone.
I monitored mpg avg and instant. On my trip to the camp ground, I had a final mpg of 13.8. I was seeing some 14.2 mpg. That actually corresponded with my fuel gauge.
Instant mpg I could never get over 50 mpg. In a car I see 99.99 all the time coasting down hills
On the way home I only got to 13.7. I was very pleased. Then when I refilled just before I got home, I put in almost 43 gallons for a 440 mile trip. So real world I got around 10 mpg. Well that does make it easier to calculate my fuel needs. I seemed to get better gas mileage in 45-50 mile driving, 63-65 not as good so I think wind resistance plays a big part. Also I only have 1600 mile on my rig so I haven't really even broken the F450 - V10 in yet. I'll be getting 15 mpg soon. Then I can use the RV to go get milk and bread and drive to the train station every day

Simple answer, NO. We've had three motorhomes, a 38' Class A, a 24' C and a 32' C, never got more than 6-8. Never seemed to make any difference if we were or were not towing our car. I'm sure the mileage varied depending upon speed and terrain. We just don't pay much attention to the mileage. I don't mean fuel economy isn't important, but honestly, if you want gas mileage take a bus or the train. No one buys a motorhome for the gas mileage.

I've owned two Ford Class C's and the best I ever got while towing a mid-sized toad was about 8 mpg. Do salesmen lie? Do bears go in the woods?

Was the salesmens lips moving when he told you that? If so you can pretty much assume he was lying along with about 99% of what he said to make the sale.

Maybe with it empty, going downhill and a tailwind.

Probably a rookie salesman with no clue.

I can't see how any RV salesman would not know what MPG's for RV's average. It's common knowledge. He just didn't want to scare off a newbie customer and knew there was nothing they could do about once they signed the line.

I'm sure there are a lot of novice RV'rs who can be dazzled by the B.S.

It doesn't matter how long you've been in RVing, do your homework, research, and you'll be surprised how much more you know than most salesman.

I've bought 3 RV's through a local dealer. I have known my salesman since 1998 and he was there before I dealt with them.

He's been in the business for 25+ years selling RV's at this same dealer.

Definitely the exception. I know his integrity and he would never feed someone B.S. to make a sale.

Just took our Greyhawk 31SS with Ford V10 from SE Louisiana to E Tennessee and back. I'll say this, the V10 is a beast. It never missed a beat in the mountains and hills but I only saw 8.1MPH (that was when I stayed out of the gas and tried to maintain no more than 3000 RPMs and let the hills work for me).

Exclamation Gas Guzzle not MPH

The best we can do towing a vehicle on our Gray Hawk is 7 -8 mpg. Lots of times in the mountains it is 5-6 mph. I think the V10 Ford was designed by Exon-Mobile. Good power but loves gasoline.

I had a 2002 31 foot Itasca,
It got 10 mpg when I would completely fill it at around 1/2 tank.
I then discovered when I couldn't fit into the gas station I planned and had to run it down to about 1/8th of a tank that things ran better with the reduced weight.
I stayed in overdrive a lot more and my gas mileage went up to 12 mpg.
I then starting always running it from 1/4 to 3/4 and stayed pretty close to 12 mpg with much less shifting out of top gear.

What size was that tank? My Greyhawk has 55 gal tank.

It's probably not entirely necessary, but I get nervous when I get down to about 1/3 tank. If it's hot out, bumping against 1/4 tank is nearly panic inducing because I'm afraid the generator will shut down, and thus the AC units will too. We'd probably be fine with just the dash AC for quite a while, but still...
